There are many, many myths circulating in the media and on the Internet about Proposition 8. This fact sheet from the Protectmarriage.com website sets forth the following facts about Proposition 8.
Proposition 8 protects the people’s will and overturns activist judges.
In 2000 over 61% of Californians voted in favor of Proposition 22 to reaffirm that only marriage between a man and a woman is valid or recognized in California. However, because this language wasn’t put into the state Constitution when it was approved, four activist judges from San Francisco wrongly overturned the people’s vote. In November 2008, Proposition 8 gives California voters the opportunity to reverse the court’s decision and restore the definition of marriage as between a man and a woman in the state Constitution.
Proposition 8 is simple and straightforward.
Proposition 8 contains the same 14 words that were previously approved in 2000 by over 61% of California voters: “Only marriage between a man and a woman is valid or recognized in California.” By putting these words directly into the state Constitution, the court cannot strike them down as unconstitutional.
Proposition 8 is about preserving marriage; it’s not an attack on the gay lifestyle.
Proposition 8 doesn’t take away any rights or benefits from gay or lesbian domestic partners. Under California law, “domestic partners shall have the same rights, protections and benefits” as married spouses. (Family Code §297.5.) There are no exceptions to this. Proposition 8 will not change this.
Proposition 8 protects our children.
Proposition 8 protects our children from being taught in public schools that same-sex marriage is the same as traditional marriage. In health education classes, state law requires teachers to instruct children as young as kindergarteners about marriage. (Education Code §51890.) If the same-sex marriage ruling is not overturned, teachers will be required to teach young children that there is no difference between gay marriage and traditional marriage.

The 4 points that Guy delivers on this post can be beneficial for those of us who will be going door to door or having other opportunties of discussion on this subject. If we keep to these simple points we can invite a proper spirit into our discussion and avoid contention.
I completely agree with the four points stated above. I also thought that it was interesting to note that there are already many, many states that have already done the same legislation. In fact, according to Christine Vestal, California Gay Marriage Ruling Sparks New Debate:
“Forty-four states have passed legislation making clear that marriage is between a man and a woman. More than half of those states, twenty-seven in all, have done so by constitutional amendments like the ones pending in California, Arizona, and Florida.”
I agree with the four statements as well. There is much more at stake here than homosexual marriage.
This is disgusting. Family values are not at stake. This is an attempt to circumvent equality by changing the constitution. Why don’t we amend the US constitution to say Slavery is legal again? No? That’s not right? Then maybe we should tell straight people that they can’t vote? I happen to enjoy my right to vote and I think gay people do, too. Let them alone. They aren’t hurting anything.
Thanks for the blog. Your comments are very thoughtful and much needed!!
I feel sorry for same-sex couples because same-sex mar-riage proponents have been duped…they think they are fighting for equality or love but that is not true and here’s why…
It seems that prop. 8 isn’t really about love.
Prop. 8 is about freedom for ALL Americans.
Some of the biggest pushers on prop. 8 do not care about same-sex relationships, they care about their agenda to hijack our freedoms, including those of same-sex couples.
If prop. 8 fails it will hurt the freedoms of you, me, AND same-sex couples.
Yes! Prop. 8 is a vote for freedom. There is a better way we can all live together in peace rather than demand freedoms be surrendered.

This youtube was awesome. It talks about how we can all live in peace and love with yes prop.8 stuff http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vI-GjWY-WlA
Anyone who votes Yes on prop 8 in uneducated and unjust. Prop 8 is NOT AN EDUCATIONAL PROPOSITION! Teaching marriage for same or heterosexual couples are both illegal, so the educational “reason” is a LIE. The right to marry is a BASIC HUMAN RIGHT for an American Citizen. Above this, it says “Proposition 8 doesn’t take away any rights or benefits from gay or lesbian domestic partners”, when in fact it is taking away the right to marry of same sex couples. If you belive that same sex marriage is wrong, DON’T DO IT, but DO NOT try and force your opinions and beliefs on to others and take away their rights. THIS PROPOSITION IS UNFAIR AND COMPLETELY WRONG!!! NO on Prop 8!
HOW SAD! This proposition is the TRUTH. Is anyone interested in the truth any more? The education code is the “law” set by the state that ALL credentialed teachers must go by. And yes… it states that everyone from kindergarten through 12th grade will be taught about “(D) Family health and child development, including the legal and
financial aspects and responsibilities of marriage and parenthood.” THIS IS THE EXACT WORDING. YOU GAY ACTIVISTS ARE TRYING TO MAKE US FEEL SORRY FOR YOU. **YOU HAVE EVERY RIGHT THAT A MARRIED COUPLE HAS IN THE STATE OF CALIFORNIA UNDER THE DOMESTIC PARTNERSHIP LAW** THERE IS NO DIFFERENCE. IT JUST IS NOT “CALLED MARRIAGE”. STOP WHINING!!!!!!
Stop whining? Your a loser, you religious fanatic Mary. They have natural rights as it says in the US CONSTITUTION to marry and have the right to the Pursuit of Happiness. Why deny any US citizen to that?
